Tom ran as fast as he could along the forest path, his leaden legs refusing to go any faster.
He was sure the kidnappers were after him, but he dare not stop and look back.
Frantic with worry he put his hand inside his jacket pocket and felt for her, but the pocket was empty. In despair he shouted her name.
It was always the same dream and each time he awoke at the same point, gasping for breath and calling for her.

An exciting fantasy for nine year olds, and all who are young at heart.

*Possible spoiler alert* I really liked this story, although I think it may be too scary for some younger children, at times. I loved the rat "Mask", and all of her behaviors. She reminded me of my first pet rat, who used to do some of the same things, like scampering up to sit on my shoulder and tickle my ear with her whiskers. She used to like walking across my computer keyboard when I was typing, too. I thought the characters were pretty well developed -- the reader can get a good idea of how shy and lonely the young protagonist is, and his parents are somewhat developed, although also somewhat cliched. I thought the action moved along and the whole kidnapping and ransom story played out rather well. That said(Here's the possible spoiler.)I did not like the twist at the end. The story was moving along and then suddenly, whoops! What happened? Why did it have to end the way it did? Why? The ending practically negated the whole rest of the story. I won't give it away completely. I'll let you judge for yourself. I do recommend this story to readers, I just wish the author had ended it in a different way. Read it and see what you think.

A Rat and a Ransom edition by Y I Lee Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I was sent this book by the author - thank you, I enjoyed it. This story was delightful, fast-paced, with an unexpected end. I would think a younger reader would love the book, even though it would make adults appreciate the themes of faith, love and the needs of children.

Yes, a good read.
This was such a lovely book even though it was about a rat. Yes I am not very fond of our rodent friends, but I have to say the rat in this book may have swayed me. The book was fun to read and it really surprised me at the end. This would be a great book for any child to read as it it very entertaining and engaging. The pictures are just darling and do the characters justice. You will find yourself wanting to know more about "Mask" and any other adventures she may have in the future. *hint hint*
Tom has wanted a pet for a long time but a rat was not his first choice. However, when a small animal appears in the watering can he doesn't hesitate and rescue the baby rat. He immediately feels in love with her and will do everything in his power to convince her parents to let him adopt her. Mask will change Tom life as well as the rest of the family.

A rat and a ransom is a fast and loving book, which as any other children book has a sweet and likeable main character whose adventures drags us through unexpected places and leaves us at the end with some valuable lessons.

Tom is a privileged kid, he lives with his mother and father in a beautiful place but sometimes what a kid needs is a friend, a special person who is there by his side during the most important moments of life. He is an intelligent nine-year-old boy with a maturity that will impress you and entertaining at the same time.

A book with a sweet message about how important pets are in children lives, how influential they can be on their behaviors and how much love it can bring to the entire family. Pets, no matter if they are rats, can be the key that opens a whole world of adventures.

The author tales the story with simple but emotional words, with a fresh and great writing style, including dialogues between the characters that help create a more believable world. With a fast rhythm, short chapters and an increasing sense of adrenaline.

One of the things I like the most was the quota of action the book has, which was very surprising and engaging. The whole plot with the two bad guys was an smart choice and it truly was fun to read.

Overall, this is a very good book recommendable for children and adults alike, ideal for reading in family. .

*** I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. ***
My ten year old daughter really enjoyed this book. After she read it, I did too. It is a cleaver book with a great story line.
A Charming story of a young boy and his pet rat. A great story of love between a boy and his companion. Though his mother is anxious about the new pet, once the author adds some kidnappers into the mix, the rat becomes an indispensable partner. A fun book for any young reader in the 8-12 range, just be prepared for your son to want a new pet!
This book was so good that I couldn't put it down. I didn't know what to think at first. I thought it may be for young children only. It would certainly be safe for young children, but it was entertaining for me, too. I love how Lee never does what you would expect. This story had such a twist that I never ever saw it coming. This is a heartwarming story that you won't be able to put down. The characters are well developed. I felt happiness, fear, and tears at different points in the story. You will completely miss out if you miss this title. I suggest her other book as well, which was just as good.
A Rat and A Ransom is a fast read. There are some plot twists in the story that staggered me for a bit. I'm not a fan of rats at all, but Mask is a rat to grow fond of. It's difficult to write about this story without disclosing the surprising ending. I was a little disappointed in that twist, but only due to selfish reasons. It only goes to show you that this author, Y.I Lee, is capable of taking the reader's mind any place she chooses and that's a good talent. I loved the nine year old boy, Tom, and she portrayed him fabulously. He's quite an amazing boy who goes on a dangerous adventure after being kidnapped. This story will indeed, keep you turning the pages. There is lots of suspense, and if you or a 5th grader likes action and adventure, this would be a really nice pick. Make sure you put the time aside to complete this book once you start it, or you could be late for an appointment or such!
